Doja Cat Ends Rap’s No. 1 Chart Drought

For the first time since Nicki Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl” last August, another rap song has finally landed the No. 1 spot on the charts with Doja Cat’s “Paint the Town Red.”

After spending 5 weeks on the charts and sitting pretty at No. 3 for a while, “Paint the Town Red” officially moved up to No. 1 this Monday. The single reached the No. 1 spot on the charts after earning 32.1 million airplay impressions, 27.7 million streams and over 8,000 downloads according to a recent Billboard report.

“Paint the Town Red” is Doja Cat’s second single to hit number one after “Say So” in 2020 with Nicki Minaj. Doja has had an odd few months of interactions with her fans and followers, as she called out her old music and essentially mocked her fans for “falling for” her “cash grab” pop albums. The pop star has since promised her fans that she intends to move genres from pop to rap, saying that she “also agree[s] with everyone who said the majority of my rap verses are mid and corny” but she “wasn’t trying to prove anything I just enjoy making music but I’m getting tired of hearing y’all say that I can’t so I will.”

So far, so good on Doja’s transition; and clearly her fans agree as they listened enough to bump it up to Number 1 on the charts. With her latest two singles, fans are quickly gaining excitement for her upcoming ‘Scarlet’ album. Maybe she will give fans a special preview of the upcoming album at her VMA performance tonight.
