Time Warp Brings Its Mannheim Rulebook to Boyle Heights, and the Day-by-Day Split Is Out

The German techno institution’s first Los Angeles edition takes over the Ace Warehouses at Ace*Mission Studios on November 27 and 28. Here’s who plays which day.

Earlier this year, I stood in the shadow of the Sixth Street Viaduct at Ace*Mission Studios and watched Skyline finally find a home that matched its sound. The gritty corner of Boyle Heights, just east of the Arts District, made techno feel like it belonged to the neighborhood.

On Friday, November 27 and Saturday, November 28, Time Warp makes its Los Angeles debut in partnership with Insomniac and Factory 93. Skyline already proved Ace*Mission can handle a festival. This time Time Warp takes over the Ace Warehouses, where more than 30 artists will play across three indoor stages from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. both days. That’s 24 hours of dancing over Thanksgiving weekend, 21 and over.

Time Warp started in Germany in 1994, and Mannheim is its home base. The brand’s own tagline is just three words, “Techno. Since 1994.” Over three decades it became known as much for the production as the lineups, with signature floor designs, innovative lighting and crystal-clear sound. The brand has since carried that formula to New York, São Paulo and Madrid, and earlier this year to Miami, where Time Warp took over Factory Town in April. Los Angeles, as the promoters put it, “doesn’t get a spin-off. It gets the core experience.”

The full lineup is posted in alphabetical order, so there’s no headliner hierarchy here, just a split that makes each day feel distinct.

Friday mixes house heavyweights with techno range. Loco Dice and The Martinez Brothers bring the groove, DESIREE and Ahmed Spins keep a foot on the house side, Tiga brings the electroclash swagger, and HAAi, Funk Tribu, ONYVAA, ØTTA, INVT and Cloudy cover everything from groove to hard techno. The back-to-backs are where Friday gets interesting: Gerd Janson b2b Julya Karma is billed as a world debut, Quest goes b2b with Ryan Elliott, and Helena Hauff, added in early October, joins Juliana Huxtable for what the promoters are calling a rare b2b. Hauff’s hardware-driven mix of techno, electro and industrial next to Huxtable’s boundary-pushing selections is, in the promoters’ words, “anything but predictable.”

Saturday has the biggest techno names. Richie Hawtin returns to Ace*Mission nearly nine months after his Skyline set, the one where I spotted Insomniac founder Pasquale Rotella dancing right next to him. Ben Klock and Rødhåd join him on the techno end, East End Dubs, Luuk van Dijk and SOSA bring the house, Chlär and Novah take the groove harder, and southstar adds a shot of speed garage. Saturday’s pairings are just as strong: Blawan b2b Elli Acula in its U.S. debut, Dennis Ferrer b2b Skream, D.Dan b2b Freddy K, Heidi Lawden b2b Masha Mar and SPFDJ b2b TOCCORORO.

The lineup saves room for the home team too. Colored Craig and fun2bjane play Friday, and John Bryars and ØNYX play Saturday, all artists with roots in LA and California’s underground. For a brand that could easily fly in 30 Europeans and call it a day, that’s a nice touch.

The weekend before, Time Warp holds its ninth Brooklyn edition at the Duggal Greenhouse. A week later, the West Coast finally gets its turn. Two-day General Admission and Stage Access passes are on sale now, and single-day tickets went on sale October 23. Pace yourself. It’s a long weekend.
