On March 17th via his Twitter, Meek Mill released a teaser trailer for his upcoming Free Meek Amazon documentary series that explores his life, career, and journey through the criminal justice system.
The minute-long trailer, set to the Philadelphia rapper’s 2018 track “Trauma,” gives a sneak peek into the six-part series, which, according to the artist’s tweet, “explores my life and the flaws in the criminal justice system that have haunted me and others like me.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, executive producers for the doc series include Jay-Z under the Roc Nation banner, Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman of Intellectual Property Corp., as well as investigative journalist Paul Solotaroff and documentary filmmaker Isaac Solotaroff.
Last November, Meek was sent to county lockup for two to four years after he was captured while performing a wheelie in an Instagram video. It was the third time Judge Genece Brinkley sent the rapper to prison for violating his probation. The sentencing sparked public outrage and began a series of investigations after many considered it too severe.
The docuseries will explore those investigations. Advocates see the sentencing as evidence of the inequalities in a criminal justice system where African-Americans are incarcerated at nearly six times the rate of whites.
“I never really looked at it as a nightmare; I looked at it as real life for a black kid in America — this is real life,” Meek says in the clip.
Amazon notes that the investigative series will follow Mill and his supporters as they attempt to uncover the different facets of corruption that kept the rapper under the thumb of Philadelphia’s criminal justice system for more than a decade, THR previously reported.
The series will also touch on the rapper’s life post-incarceration. Each hour long episode will unravel Mill’s past, covering everything from the childhood trauma that shaped him as an artist, to the vast conspiracy behind his latest imprisonment, while also following present-day developments in his legal battle, personal life and music career.
