Despite all the allegations of a hostile work environment and sexual harassment, Lizzo is slated to be awarded with the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award tonight at the Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) Gala.
This Thursday night, Lizzo will receive the Quincy Jones Award and be in the spotlight for all of her philanthropic endeavors and her commitment to social justice. Prior to the allegations made by her ex-dancers, Lizzo has only been known as a body positivity advocate.
Fans and followers know her as caring and giving as she has donated endless amounts to scholarship funds, advocated for social justice, and helped raise over $500,000 for various charities. After the overturning of Roe v. Wade last year, Lizzo made a generous donation of $1 million to Planned Parenthood and the National Network of Abortion Funds. She makes annual contributions of $500,000 to numerous charitable programs, some including the University of Houston, Save Our Sisters United, Marsha P. Johnson Institute and more.
Willie “Prophet” Stiggers, the co-founder and chairman of BMAC, made a statement announcing Lizzo as receiving the honorary award. He said: “The Black Music Action Coalition is proud to honor Lizzo and Sylvia Rhone at this year’s Gala, as they join a group of trailblazers who have made immense impact within the music industry and beyond. We applaud their dedication to pushing boundaries, amplifying Black voices and crashing through those glass ceilings creating space for Black Women.”
The generous and positive actions Lizzo has constantly shown the world have been all we’ve known of her for a long time – until the allegations from past dancers began. The dancers have claimed that Lizzo created a hostile work environment through body shaming and sexual harassment. Lizzo intends to countersue her ex-employees as photos and videos have surfaced from the nights that the alleged harassment occurred of the accusing dancers “happily carousing” and enjoying their time.
It is unknown when the counter-lawsuit would begin to take effect or when trial would potentially begin. Regardless of the allegations and the lawsuit, Lizzo will receive the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award this evening at the 2023 BMAC Gala.
