A trailer for Aquaman 2 hit the screens for the first time at CinemaCon this week, and it included a surprise for fans with the appearance of Amber Heard. The trailer shows Heard entering a battle scene aside Jason Mamoa, confirming that she is returning for her previous role as Mera.
Heard is back on the big screen just one year after the well-covered defamation trial with her ex-husband, Johnny Depp. Fans are confused and shocked by her continued role after Heard testified last year that she nearly lost her role in Aquaman due to the amount of media coverage their court case was receiving. Warner Bros. Pictures president at the time confirmed that Heard was almost recast due to the lack of chemistry onscreen.
A petition was even started by fans during the defamation trial attempting to force Heard out of her role in the Aquaman sequel. The petition received nearly 4.5 million signatures in support of Heard not returning to the series.
These efforts were clearly wasted as she is indeed still appearing in her same role in the sequel. No one is quite sure how prominent of a role Mera is set to play this time around. The trailer was only shown at CinemaCon this week and has not yet been released otherwise.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set release later this year, coming to theaters on December 20th.
