After being sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in 2020, Tory Lanez’s legal team has filed a motion in an effort to bail the rapper out of jail and appeal his sentence.
Lanez’s was officially sentenced earlier this month for the shooting that occurred in July of 2020. Since the trial ended, he has been held in Los Angeles County Jail with minimal privileges. This Monday, court reporter Meghann Cuniff told the public that Lanez’s team filed a “bail on appeal” motion, setting a hearing for next week on September 5th.
Cuniff took to social media to share the news and explain what the motion truly means. She told her followers: “Ask and ye shall receive: Tory Lanez’z lawyers appear to have filed a motion to bail him out of jail as he appeals his judgment and sentence for shooting Megan Thee Stallion. I don’t have a copy yet, but there’s a docket entry yesterday in the case file. Hearing is Sept. 5.”
Cuniff says that the hearing is scheduled with Judge David Herriford, who is the same judge that ruled on the initial trial and gave Lanez a 10 year sentence. She said: “Regarding the actual motion, DA’s office says they weren’t aware anything was filed and haven’t received anything yet, but ‘132 has been dark’ which refers to Judge Herriford’s dept # and means he’s been out. But public docket entry is yesterday, hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.”
Lanez’s lawyer updated the public with the appeal process to explain that he had to allow time for other legal formalities to be finished before he could file a motion to appeal the sentence. While he and Lanez were waiting for these to be completed, Lanez was “evaluating ALL of his options.”
For now, Lanez remains in Los Angeles County Jail where is he being held in the “administrative segregation unit,” kept safely away from other dangerous inmates. Despite the separation, Lanez does not appear to be receiving any further special treatment with allegedly just two hours outside of his cell each day, just three hours of outdoor recreation time per week, and check-ins by jail staff every half hour.
