The Knocks & Dragonette Take You on a Synth-Pop Journey with “The Hero”
It feels like ages ago—15 years to be exact—since Dragonette first said Hello to us through her now-iconic collaboration with Parisian DJ and producer Martin Solveig. That track became a global hit, cementing her place in the electronic music scene. Originally formed as an electronic music band, Dragonette has since evolved into the stage name for Toronto-based artist and prolific songwriter Martina Sorbara, who has been a force behind some of the biggest dance-pop moments over the past decade and a half.
Since breaking into the industry in 2007, Dragonette has worked with some of the biggest names in dance music, collaborating with heavyweights like Kaskade, Basement Jaxx, and Galantis, and lending her songwriting talents to major artists such as Keith Urban, Cyndi Lauper, and Carly Rae Jepsen. Whether she’s crafting a chart-topping anthem or experimenting with new soundscapes, her signature electro-pop sound remains unmistakable.
Now Dragonette has reunited with the GRAMMY-nominated and multi-platinum-selling NYC duo The Knocks for a fresh chapter in their musical journey. The Knocks, comprised of James Patterson and Ben Ruttner, have built a reputation for their infectious, genre-blending sound that pulls from disco, house, hip-hop, soul, funk, indie, and pop.
Their impressive roster of collaborations spans across the music spectrum—ranging from indie acts like Foster The People, MGMT, and MUNA to hip-hop legends Cam’ron, Wyclef Jean, and Method Man, to dance music staples like Purple Disco Machine, ODESZA, and SOFI TUKKER, and pop superstars Billie Eilish, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Charli XCX.
The first of their recent collaborations, “Revelation” is an electrifying synth-driven anthem that taps into that euphoric, dancefloor-ready energy. As Out Magazine puts it, the track is a “euphoric synth-pop fantasy.” A high-energy, neon-drenched soundscape that invites listeners to lose themselves in the music. A signature move for both The Knocks and Dragonette.
Their latest release, “The Hero,” shifts gears into something more introspective. While still deeply rooted in their signature production style, it takes on a more reflective tone with soaring melodies and hauntingly resonant lyrics. As Dragonette’s Martina Sorbara explains, “This song is about the banality of how a relationship can turn cold. When it’s not a dramatic explosion of betrayal or strong emotions that crash together. It’s about finding yourself in the midst of something else, unseen and unknowable, making the question ‘is this working?’ hard to answer.”
Adding an extra layer of creative world-building, The Hero exists within the fictional world of Revelation Technologies, a conceptual 1980’s corporate-inspired universe where Aquaria (winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race) serves as the enigmatic muse. According to the company’s “official” spokesperson: “Many people spend a lifetime in search of a meaningful moment. We are here to help. On February 26th, we invite you to close your eyes and open your heart to the latest, cutting edge in Revelation technologies. Connect inward to your emotional self in harmony with our new product, ‘The Hero,’ and let the meaning find you.”
With a full-fledged aesthetic and immersive narrative behind their new era, The Knocks and Dragonette are proving yet again that they’re not just making music—they’re crafting entire worlds for listeners to escape into.
While there are no upcoming tour dates announced just yet, fans should stay tuned—because if The Knocks and Dragonette decide to hit the road together, it’s bound to be an unmissable double-headlining experience. Until then, Revelation and “The Hero” are here to soundtrack your late nights and neon-lit daydreams.
So plug in, turn up the volume, and enjoy the ride. I just came to say hello… 😉
