The Best of the Met Gala

The Met Gala was last night, bringing together some of the most popular celebrities and icons to honor Karl Lagerfeld, recently deceased creative director of Chanel.

This year’s theme “In honor of Karl” was based on the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” Stars dressed in theme to honor Lagerfeld through recreating some of his best designs and some of his personal style as well. Many arrived in black and white with pearls being a common theme to go along with Chanel’s classic style.

Some of our favorite looks from the night were served by Rihanna and ASAP Rocky. Rocky’s outfit was inspired by one Lagerfeld wore during a Chanel show, while Rihanna’s all white Valentino gown paid homage to Lagerfeld’s iconic bridal looks created for Chanel.

Anne Hathaway arrived at the Gala in a stunning white tweed Versace gown, accessorized with matching tweed gloves. Hathaway’s look was directly related to the theme because of Lagerfeld’s consistent use of tweed in his designs.

Dua Lipa also arrived dressed to impress last night. Met Gala co-chair arrived in a classic white Chanel bridal gown. The gown was previously worn by supermodel Claudia Schiffer when she wore it as Chanel’s final look in the 1995-96 runway show. Dua Lipa finished off the iconic look with stunning platinum Tiffany & Co. jewelry including a necklace with a primary diamond of over 200 carats.

Yara Shahidi arrived in a gorgeous corset mermaid gown that paid tribute to Chanel’s ’93 haute couture collection. Chanel was the first brand to work with Shahidi, which is where she says her “genuine appreciation for fashion comes from.”

Yung Miami and Diddy arrived at the Gala in matching black. Diddy paid tribute to Lagerfeld through his own clothing line, Sean John, from which he wore a large statement cape covered in roses overtop a studded jacket, button down shirt and matching pants. Diddy’s dramatically large outfit did not stop Yung Miami from shining. Her first Met Gala attendance was complete with a show-stopping look; Miami wore a sheer floor-length gown with a dramatically high fuzzy neckline and ruffled hemline with a sheer bodice adorned with pearls.

The Met Gala also saw some quite extreme looks this year, with two celebrities dressing to theme by dressing as Lagerfeld’s cat, Choupette. Actor Jared Leto and singer Doja Cat both arrived in different takes on Choupette, a fluffy white Birman cat. Leto arrived in a more literal Choupette outfit, dressed in a full body white cat suit, like that of a mascot suit. Grammy award winner, Doja Cat, took a similar route, but went with a silver and white floor-length Oscar de la Renta gown that even had cat ears on the hood. Doja Cat completed her look with facial prosthetics and sharp claws on her nails.
