TIME Studios has announced that they will be producing a documentary, called Understanding Christopher Wallace, that will follow the life of the Notorious B.I.G., but from his son’s perspective.
The documentary is described as “an intimate look at the untold life story of one of the greatest rappers to ever live . . . from the perspective of the son who never knew him.” The Notorious B.I.G. was tragically shot and killed when his son, C. J. Wallace, was only 5 months old. The film will serve as “a dual narrative that navigates between the lives of both Christopher Jr. and Sr. — from the 2020’s back to the 1980’s — exploring concepts of identity, legacy, and fatherhood. As C.J. chases a deeper understanding of his own destiny, his quest uncovers a more holistic portrait of his dad than the world has ever known.”
The director of popular show Barry, Vikram Gandhi, will produce the film alongside Frank White’s Willie Mack and Tiffany Persons. There will be multiple features in the movie as well, including C.J.’s mother, Faith Evans, Lil Kim, Lil Cease and more.
C.J. recently shared a statement about his journey. He said that “over the past few years, I realized my personal journey is connected to understanding who Christopher George Latore Wallace was outside of his big rap persona. I am on a journey to fully understand the world he lived in and the massive impact he had on American and Black history and by doing so, I can ensure that I honor his hopes and dreams while I build and create my own legacy for future generations of Wallaces.”
Vikram Gandhi told reporters that being a part of the documentary is “an honor.” Head of documentary at Time Studios and executive producer on the film, Loren Hammonds, told reporters that the film is about “so much more” than just the Notorious B.I.G.’s impact on music and pop culture. She says, “it’s about fatherhood, loss, and love. It’s incredibly special to be able to let audiences learn about the man behind the myth through C.J.’s eyes, and we’re very proud to play a part in carrying on Christopher Wallace’s inimitable legacy.”
There has been no announcement of an official trailer or release date. Fans will just have to keep their eyes open for the next update, but Understanding Christopher Wallace seems like it will add to the iconic reputation that the Notorious B.I.G. already holds.
