Immediately after the crash, around 9:40 PM, US Park Police officers and Secret Service agents arrived on scene. When officers first arrived, the “cause and manner” of the crash had not yet been determined, according to the Secret Service Chief of Communications, Anthony Guglielmi. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the driver “intentionally struck” the barriers, crashing the truck.
Witnesses claim to have seen a flag brandishing a swastika at the scene of the crash. No such flag was mentioned in police or Secret Service statements, but witnesses of the crash said there was a Nazi flag that “apparently came from inside the truck.”
The driver was arrested at the scene and identified as 19-year-old Sai Varshith Kandula from Chesterfield, Missouri. Because of the crash, Kandula is being charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, trespassing, destruction of federal property, and threatening to kill/kidnap/inflict harm on a president, vice president, or family member.
The White House has yet to release a public statement regarding the incident. There is no news on when Kandula will have his first court date or what the charges could amount to in jail time.
