Released under Jay-Z’s third album ‘Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life’ the song “Paper Chase” has landed Hov and Timbaland in a legal battle. It’s Almost hard to imagine that it’s been 21 years and nothing has come up until now.
Soul artist Ernie Hines has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit for the use of his composition “Help Me Put Out the Flame (In my Heart).” Hines is claiming his composition of the song appears in the song “Paper Chase.” The 81-year old soul artist is suing for $2 million stating that his track from 1969 was sampled without his permission, nor has he ever received royalties from the Jay-Z song.
As for why it’s taken 21 years for this to come to light, Hines’ lawyer says that he is a senior citizen who doesn’t listen to rap music and wasn’t made aware of “Paper Chase” up until last year. Hines named Jay-Z, Timbaland, Rocafella Records and Sony Music in his lawsuit.
Stay tuned for what happens and as details develop.
