Cult of Venus Opens for Laurent Mayberry and Mesmerizes at The Belasco

This past Sunday, Cult of Venus took the stage at The Belasco in Los Angeles, opening for Lauren Mayberry on the final stop of her American tour. Under the dim, moody lighting of the historic venue, the enigmatic NYC-based artist delivered a performance that was equal parts hypnotic and defiant—solidifying her status as one of the most intriguing forces in the alternative electronic scene today.

Shrouded in mystery, Cult of Venus performed her set that felt like an intimate ritual unfolding before the audience. Armed with a guitar, synth, and loop pedal, she built each track layer by layer, letting spectral vocals weave through pulsating electronic beats.

Fans of Grimes, ANOHNI, and Caroline Polachek would find themselves right at home in her sound—dreamlike yet urgent, anthemic yet deeply personal. Her setlist featured “Algorithm,” a searing critique of social media as a surveillance tool, as well as “Time Capsule,” a poetic reflection on cyclical violence and modern disillusionment.

This show at The Belasco marked the culmination of Cult of Venus’s tour with Lauren Mayberry, where she’s been serving as direct support for the CHVRCHES frontwoman across the country. Over the past few months, she has also opened for City of the Sun in sold-out shows on the West Coast and has become a fixture in the NYC underground scene with performances at MOMA PS1, Fotografiska’s Chapel Bar, and even Rikers Island women’s prison.

Beyond her music, Cult of Venus operates as an artist-activist, using her platform to amplify issues of surveillance, incarceration, and environmental collapse. Her deliberate anonymity—avoiding photographs and cultivating an air of mystique—only deepens the intrigue, making each live performance feel like a fleeting glimpse into an uncharted world.

With a debut album slated for 2024, her trajectory is set for something bigger. If her recent shows are any indication, Cult of Venus is no longer just an underground sensation—she’s stepping fully into the spotlight, on her own terms.

For our readers in the San Francisco Bay Area, don’t miss your chance to catch her live at The Fillmore this May.
