Mortal Kombat 2 delayed 7 months, to May 2026

Warner Bros. has shifted the release date of Mortal Kombat II, moving the highly anticipated sequel from October 24, 2025, to May 15, 2026. The seven-month delay is not a result of production setbacks—the film has already wrapped—but rather a strategic decision to place the title in a competitive summer box office window.

Filmed in Australia and completed in early 2024 after weathering delays caused by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, the sequel is positioned as a stronger, more expansive follow-up to 2021’s Mortal Kombat. This time, the studio is betting on the summer release frame to maximize both reach and revenue, aligning the project with blockbuster season audiences.

The cast is anchored by Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, a fan-favorite character finally making his cinematic debut. Urban joins a returning ensemble that includes Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Jax, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero, while introducing new additions such as Kitana, Jade, and Shao Kahn. Series co-creator Ed Boon has praised the approach, noting that Urban’s interpretation of Cage offers a fresh yet faithful take on the character.

The anticipation is already measurable: the red-band trailer shattered viewership records with over 106 million streams in its first 24 hours, signaling strong audience interest well ahead of release. Reports from early test screenings suggest similarly positive momentum, giving Warner Bros. added confidence in the film’s placement.

With its new date, Mortal Kombat II is no longer a fall release but a summer tentpole. For fans, the delay means a longer wait. For the studio, it could be the move that ensures the franchise not only continues but grows its presence on the global stage.
