Eminem’s “Stan” Gets Added to Merriam-Webster

The Marshal Mathers LP turns 19 years old this year and Merriam-Webster is adding the cult classic ‘Stan’ to its dictionary.

The term ‘Stan’ derives from a song on the LP where it depicts a die hard Eminem fan whose obsession leads to his death as a result of his unreciprocated love for the rapper. This lead to Eminem fans referring to themselves as ‘stans’ to show their love for the rapper. The use of this term grew into something bigger as it began to be widely used as a term to describe someone who is a die hard fan of anything.

Merriam-Webster has taken the development of the term ‘Stan’ and has added to its dictionary as both a noun and verb. As a noun, it defined as “an extremely or excessively enthusiastic and devoted fan.” Where as a verb, it defined as “exhibiting fandom to an extreme or excessive degree to be an extremely devoted and enthusiastic fan of someone or something.”
