In the 1920s and ’30s there was a rebirth of the ‘Negro’. People used to call us ‘Negroes’ back then. They called it the Harlem Renaissance. Black people were creating a new identity. From literature to music to hustling. The old ways of the South were out the door and new beginnings were happening.
